The Emergency Center Goes to Market with Healthcare Provider Application by Turning to Avahi to Build a Secure AWS Platform That Enables AI Analysis

Executive Summary

The Emergency Center needed to identify a back-end platform to support an application it has developed that automatically transcribes conversations between doctors and patients and uses AI to generate potential treatments. To solve this challenge, The Emergency Center turned to Avahi Technologies, which configured and deployed a serverless infrastructure in the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud to host AWS HealthScribe, a HIPAA-eligible service that provides a back-end platform to deploy applications that require AI capabilities. With the AWS HealthScribe platform deployed by Avahi, The Emergency Center is now poised to go to market with its clinical transcription and analysis solution.

About the Customer

Based in San Antonio, The Emergency Center (TEC) is a fully-equipped emergency facility that is staffed 24/7 with board-certified physicians, registered nurses, and radiology technologists. TEC also has an on-site lab and a full radiology suite equipped with CT scanner, digital X-ray, and ultrasound devices.

Customer Challenge: Deploy Back-End Cloud Infrastructure to Support AI

The Emergency Center is a healthcare provider, but its internal IT team is actually on the brink of becoming a start-up software development firm with a solution for the healthcare industry. The team needed to identify a back-end platform to support an application it had developed that automatically transcribes conversations between doctors and patients and uses AI to generate potential treatments.

The service helps clinicians work more efficiently and enhance patient experiences by giving them detailed information on their visits with doctors. For the application to work properly, the back-end platform needs to leverage generative artificial intelligence that can produce text, images, and other media. TEC also wanted to build an infrastructure that would scale easily as the customer base grows.

Partner Solution: Avahi Designs and Deploys AWS HealthScribe Platform

To solve this challenge, The Emergency Center turned to Avahi Technologies, which configured and deployed a serverless infrastructure in the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud using AWS Lambda. As shown in the image below, the infrastructure hosts AWS HealthScribe, a HIPAA-eligible service that provides a back-end platform on which TEC can deploy its application to automatically generate clinical notes by analyzing patient-clinician conversations.

Using AWS Glue, AWS HealthScribe extracts audio conversations from the digital recordings the front-end application creates and stores them in Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3) buckets. The AWS Lamba serverless architecture then processes the conversations with Amazon Comprehend Medical—which uses natural language processing models to sort data and compile information through advanced machine learning.

Results and Benefits: Poised to Go to Market with Key Healthcare Database Integrations

With the AWS HealthScribe platform deployed by Avahi, The Emergency Center is now poised to go to market with its clinical transcription and analysis solution. Because Avahi accelerated the completion of the project, the company was able to demo the solution at a major healthcare industry conference.

Avahi also integrated the AWS HealthScribe platform with two third-party services that provide additional valuable information to clinicians. These include RxNorm, a naming system for prescribed drugs that supports interoperation between drug terminologies and pharmacy systems. The other key integrated service is the ICD-10 Clinical Modification database, which provides a source for diagnosis codes in the US that helps healthcare providers and payers communicate on the types of treatment provided to patients.

As the solution becomes available, TEC customers will benefit from automated patient notes delivered to clinician devices via a secure, low-latency, and highly-available service. The HIPAA-compliant solution will transcribe conversations between doctors and patients, document doctor notes, and provide AI-generated recommendations on potential treatments —so healthcare providers can improve patient outcomes.
